James Boatman

James Boatman was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. He attended Camoson College in Victoria, BC and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver where he studied under Jeff Wall and Ken Lum. James Boatman currently lives and works between Berlin, Vancouver and LA.

Taking inspiration from vibrations in sound, Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism, James Boatman's paintings exemplify rhythm and movement. The energy of Boatman's process is actively transferred to his art in the repeated application and removal of multiple, thick, fluid layers. The resulting depth and vibrancy echo the dynamism and vigor of its creation.  In addition to acrylic and resin on wood board paintings, Boatman works in powder pigments and metallics – the vividly intense colors shift, change and resonate. Boatman's work invites contemplation and active movement yet ultimately resists absolute interpretation.
